A belt lipectomy is a post-bariatric procedure that tightens the tissues and eliminates excess skin and tissues in patients who have lost a great deal of weight. Although the scars from a belt lipectomy extend around the entire body at approximately waist height, patients who need this procedure are very happy to have the opportunity to eliminate the excess skin and tissues left by their massive loss of weight, even though they are left with a scar from the procedure. It is something like an extended tummy tuck, that goes all around the sides and back. The results are a lifted and more attractive abdomen and buttocks.
Ideal Candidates for a Belt Lipectomy
Healthy men and women who have lost significant amounts of weight and experience post-bariatric skin sagging are logical candidates for a belt lipectomy.
How a Belt Lipectomy is Performed
A belt lipectomy is an elective outpatient plastic surgery performed in Dr. Gerut’s fully accredited and licensed surgical suite located in his office in Hewlett, Long Island. Plastic surgery patients benefit from the attention to detail and patient comfort and safety that result from Dr. Gerut’s many years with the same surgical team, which includes a board certified anesthesiologist.
After general anesthesia has been induced, Dr. Gerut makes an incision on the lower abdomen, after which skin and fat is raised to expose the fascia and muscle, which are sutured for a tighter appearance post-recovery. Abdominal skin and fat are then pulled down, somewhat like a window shade would be pulled down, and the excess skin and fat is removed. This is repeated on the sides and back. Liposuction is also employed to remove any fat deposits for a smoother result. Drains are usually inserted, which are removed once fluid is no longer collected. Once finished, sutures are put in place, followed by a dressing and a compression garment. The garment, which minimizes movement and provided support during the recovery process, is worn 24 hours a day for 4-8 weeks.
Recovery from a Belt Lipectomy
Most of our Long Island belt lipectomy patients return home after their surgery. Conversely, you may wish to stay overnight at a nearby hotel, where Dr. Gerut can check on you later on the day of your procedure. Patients experience soreness following this procedure and find that getting into a comfortable position is a challenge. Dr. Gerut will give you prescriptions for pain management and anti-inflammatory drugs to help with the swelling. Most patients find that staying in bed for the first week, getting up to go to the bathroom, for meals, and to walk around the home, is just about right in terms of activity. It’s important to avoid strenuous activities, including heavy lifting or exercise, for several months to allow healing to complete.
