Lower Body Lift
A lower body lift is a post-bariatric procedure that tightens the tissues and eliminates excess skin and tissues in patients who have lost a great deal of weight. Anytime an individual loses a dramatic amount of weight, there is loose skin as a result. A lower body lift addresses the loose skin in the abdomen, waist, hips, thighs and buttocks. This is a big operation that has a long healing time but patients who undergo this procedure appreciate the dramatic improvement it provides them.
Ideal Candidates for a Lower Body Lift
Healthy men and women who have lost significant amounts of weight and experience post-bariatric skin sagging in the lower body are logical candidates for a lower body lift.
How a Lower Body Lift is Performed
A lower body lift is actually a combination of several procedures, including a belt lipectomy and a thigh lift. It is performed under general anesthesia in Dr. Gerut’s fully accredited and licensed surgical suite located in his office in Hewlett, Long Island. Plastic surgery patients benefit from the attention to detail and patient comfort and safety that result from Dr. Gerut’s many years with the same surgical team, which includes a board certified anesthesiologist.
After general anesthesia has been induced, Dr. Gerut makes an incision on the lower abdomen, after which skin and fat is raised to expose the fascia and muscle, which are sutured for a tighter appearance post-recovery. Abdominal skin and fat are then pulled down, somewhat like a window shade would be pulled down, and the excess skin and fat is removed. This is repeated on the sides and back. Liposuction is also employed to remove any fat deposits for a smoother result. Drains are inserted, which are removed once fluid is no longer collected. Once finished, sutures are put in place, followed by a dressing and a compression garment. The garment, which minimizes movement and provided support during the recovery process, is worn 24 hours a day for 4-8 weeks.
Turning his attention to the thigh area, Dr. Gerut makes small incisions in the inner thigh and groin area to minimize the appearance of scars once healing has taken place. In the case that the patient’s lift includes an inner thigh lift and a Brazilian Butt Lift, the incision will extend into the crease of the buttocks where it meets the top of the thigh. During your private consultation with Dr. Gerut in his Long Island plastic surgery office, he will determine the type of thigh lift procedure that will give you the results you seek. Once excess skin, fat and tissue have been removed, the skin is pulled up and the excess is removed. Absorbable sutures and a drain are placed in each thigh, after which Dr. Gerut will apply a compression garment.
Recovery from a Lower Body Lift
Most of our Long Island lower body lift patients remain in our Long Island plastic surgery recovery area overnight, observed by an RN, and return home a day or two after the procedure. Patients experience soreness following this procedure and find that getting into a comfortable position is a challenge. Dr. Gerut will give you prescriptions for pain management and anti-inflammatory drugs to help with the swelling. Although patients vary in terms of recovery speed, many patients find that staying in bed for the first week or two, getting up only to go to the bathroom, for meals, and to walk around the home, is just about right in terms of activity. It’s important to avoid strenuous activities, including heavy lifting or exercise, for several months to allow healing to complete.
You will wear your compression garments for 4-6 weeks post-procedure, until Dr. Gerut instructs you that you can top wearing them. Drains are removed as they stop filling with fluid.
