Chin Augmentation, known as mentoplasty and genioplasty by physicians, is an elective plastic surgery procedure to reshape the chin. It is performed either by inserting special implants or by moving or reshaping the bones in the chin. Often paired with a rhinoplasty or nose reshaping procedure, mentoplasty can also be performed as a standalone procedure.
Ideal Candidates for Chin Augmentation
Healthy adult men and women with a “weak” or receding chin are generally excellent candidates for chin augmentation. Rhinoplasty patients who need more projection of the chin to balance the face, including teens undergoing nose reshaping, often find that a chin implant creates an excellent overall result.
How a Chin Augmentation is Performed
Some patients can benefit from the use of injected dermal fillers to bring a receding chin forward, while others opt for the insertion of Silastic or Gore-Tex for permanent results. An incision is made inside the mouth or under the chin, the location of which will be discussed with you prior to your chin augmentation surgery. Once the implant has been secured in place, absorbable sutures will be inserted and a dressing placed.
Recovery from Chin Augmentation Surgery
Chin augmentation recovery is usually rapid and uncomplicated. Swelling and bruising are normal and can be treated with ice packs for the first few days. Most of Dr. Gerut’s New York chin augmentation patients take a week from work and find that adequate. The dressing is removed fairly soon after the procedure, and the incision will be invisible (if in the mouth) or barely visible (if under the chin) after healing.
